Jolene Mackie is an artist living and working in Kelowna BC. Her current series of work bridges her fascination with the beauty in the world around us, and the magic of the human imagination. By exploring these themes Jolene takes the opportunity to reflect on the brevity of human existence, and find joy and whimsy in the imagination. It is easy to be humbled by the human experience – while art and culture is something that can ground us in the present moment, and allow us to truly appreciate our world.
The current series of paintings I am working on are based on interpretations of the sky at different times of day, and the world around me. The title ‘Whimsical Realities’ is how I’m describing this work, in which I’m trying to affect moments of reflection for the viewer. The place depicted may not be something found in the real world, however, it evokes a sense of place and time from the viewers history, which brings unique narratives to each piece.
This work is my attempt to capture just a moment of that beauty on a painted surface. I am inspired to create by these natural miracles that humans get to experience, as they tend to bring me back to reality – and force me to be present and enjoy the moment I am in. This is the beauty of art, to encourage viewers to participate in the present – and enjoy the human imagination, instead of constantly being caught up in questions of the past and concerns for the future.
